EXCLUSIVE: Trader Joe’s Prepping to Open New Local Store

Plans are in place for a Yonkers location.

The new store will be a boon to TJ’s fans throughout the Scarsdale/Edgemont area.

Is it true? Has the Fearless Flyer found a new home? Several days ago, a member of Nextdoor.com posted that a new Trader Joe’s is set to open on Central Avenue in Yonkers, taking up residency in several empty stores within the Yonkers Gateway shopping center, which also houses DSW and Best Buy. “Saw their electrical permit posted today, AMEN!” the post declared. The Insider reached out to Trader Joe’s for comment, still pending.

For Scarsdale and Edgemont shoppers, a third location may provide relief from the congestion at the Eastchester store, where cars regularly line the block for their chance to snag a coveted space in the lot. A Yonkers hub may also ease the bustle of the Hartsdale TJ’s; though the parking there is somewhat more plentiful, cars often must idle in hopes that someone will back out of a spot.

The Insider can confirm that an electrical permit has been posted onsite.

Reactions on Nextdoor.com were mixed. “OMG, this is awesome!” one enthusiast commented. “My husband and I love Trader Joe’s.” But others shared concerns. “Traffic and parking there will be crazy!” someone fretted. (“Trader Joe’s parking is always crazy no matter where,” another person countered.) Several other people noted that the alleged new TJ’s will be a mere stone’s throw away from the recently opened Lidl grocery store. “I feel badly for them,” a sympathetic shopper said. “I am sure they didn’t expect competition from Trader Joe’s.”

Is there room for both chains, not to mention the Shop Rite and two HMarts dotting Central Avenue? It remains to be seen, but at least one commenter offered a potential solution: “Shop, shop, shop, folks!” he said.

The new Trader Joe’s will be situated by DSW in the Yonkers Gateway shopping center.
